Courses and workshops are focused on strengthening perception and technical skill through both an academic and conceptual approach. Short-term and theme-based projects enable students to engage a thorough exploration of media and ideas. Demonstrations and exercises in mark-making, contour line, color, and use of light and shadow are designed to strengthen technical ability through direct observation and experimental processes. The goal is to increase our understanding and use of the basic principles and elements of visual organization. Each of us are working with a different level of skill and experience. At Art House, our intention is to guide students from where they are and build upon that. We take an academic approach to making art, yet never forgetting the importance of serious play. We’ll focus on creating imagery that departs from realistic representation. With spatial devices such as overlapping and transparency, we’ll learn how to fragment space, using the dynamic movement of line and shape to shift perspective. Abstraction will be the result of pairing down information, isolating and embellishing details in stages and layers. Each session will involve a fluid discussion on methods of abstraction and will be accompanied by a demonstration on tools and techniques. Suggested materials: 9x12, Canson XL mixed-media pad and a set of pencils * All other drawing materials and surfaces provided. Level: This study is open to beginners and those with experience who want to explore abstraction. Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Tobias Keene brings a bit of unabashed Southern hospitality to all his patients. He moved to Washington, D.C. over thirty years ago as a freshman at Ivy College. Right after graduation, he attended World University’s School of Dentistry. Before opening Keene Dental in 1994, he worked for free clinics and some of the finest practices in the District. He is part of the 123 Dental Association and stays up-to-date on the latest dental discoveries.
