This course is open to beginners and those with experience who want to reconnect with their practice.
This study takes an expressive approach to painting, investigating the nature of color, line, shape, texture, light and shadow to create unified, balanced compositions.
We’ll work primarily from observation in order to strengthen our understanding of overall design. We will address color mixing and mark-making techniques. Basic preliminary sketches using drawing tools will be part of the process.
Suggested Materials: The most affordable is Liquitex Basics Acrylic or Windsor Newton Galeria Acrylic Paint (2 oz. tubes).
Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylics (2 oz. tubes) are very good, if you’re interested. You can mix brands.
Paint: (2 oz tubes)
cadmium red med hue
alizarin crimson
pthalo blue (green shade)
ultramarine
cadmium yellow med
hue hansa yellow light or cadmium yellow pale hue (any light yellow will do)
mars black
titanium white (big tube 6.75 oz/200ml). (W&N Galeria)
The more cost-efficient cadmiums and alizarin crimson could be labeled “hue”. **For Pthalo Blue, get Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylic. Utrecht and Blick make good paints, too.
Brushes: individually or in a set (synthetic). Large, medium & small flat, round & filbert.
*Palette paper pad, 9x12” (This is where we mix the paint)
Painting Surface: watercolor pad (140lb or more) 9x12” or larger.
- A small sketchbook is needed but paper can be provided.
